Work Visa and Business Visa Processing

Work and business visas are the two main visa types for professional activities in Russia. Despite similarities, they have fundamental differences in rights and processing procedures.

Business visa allows: participating in negotiations, conferences, signing contracts, conducting audits, but does NOT allow employment. Duration: up to 1 year (multi-entry).

Work visa allows: employment under a labor contract, receiving salary in Russia. Requires a work permit. Duration: up to 3 years.

For a business visa: invitation on official letterhead from the inviting organization. Processing time: 1–2 business days. Cost: upon request.

For a work visa: permission to hire foreign workers (for employer), work permit (for employee), invitation from the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Business visa advantage: fast processing, no work permit needed, suitable for short-term projects and business trips.

Work visa advantage: allows continuous stay, official employment, social guarantees, path to residence permits.
