Visa

A visa is an official document (stamp or sticker in a passport) granting the right to enter, stay in, or transit through a foreign country. Most foreign nationals need a visa to enter Russia, which is issued by a Russian consulate based on an invitation letter.

A visa center is a commercial organization authorized to accept visa documents on behalf of a consulate. Main operators for Russia: VFS Global, VMS. Visa centers charge an additional service fee (€20–35) but offer convenient hours and extra services (photos, copies, courier).

Visa-Free Regime

A visa-free regime is an agreement between countries allowing citizens to enter without a visa for a specified period. Russia has visa-free agreements with 60+ countries (Brazil, Argentina, Israel, South Korea, etc.). Visa-free stay is usually 30–90 days. A visa is still required for longer stays.

Visa Application Form

A visa application form is a standard form for applying for a Russian visa. Filled out online at visa.kdmid.ru (for most consulates). Contains: personal data, passport details, purpose of trip, itinerary, hosting party information. Printed, signed, and submitted with a photo.

Visa Validity

Visa validity is the period during which a visa allows entry to Russia. It differs from the duration of stay: a visa may be valid for 30 days, but the stay is limited to 14 days. Entry must occur before the validity expires. After expiration, the visa is automatically cancelled.

Visa Extension

Visa extension is a procedure to increase the stay period in Russia without leaving the country. Available in exceptional cases: illness, force majeure, contract extension (for work visas). Processed through the local migration office (GUVM MVD). Tourist visas cannot be extended.

Visa Refusal

Visa refusal is a consulate's decision not to issue a visa. Reasons: incomplete documents, suspected immigration intent, past violations, insufficient financial means. The consular fee is non-refundable. Reapplication is possible after addressing the reasons for refusal.

Visa Photo Requirements

Russian visa photo requirements: size 3.5×4.5 cm, color, white background, no glasses or headwear (except religious), face occupies 70–80% of frame, taken within last 6 months. Photo is glued to the application form. Some consulates only accept matte photos.
